Ministry of Readers

Vatican Council II, the teaching of the popes, and various postconciliar documents of the Roman congregations have already made many excellent statements about the importance of the Word of God and about reestablishing the use of Scripture in every celebration of the liturgy. (LGI1).

The post-conciliar Missal assigns responsibility for the biblical readings in the celebration of Mass - the Liturgy of the Word - to the lay readers and the deacon.  If there is no deacon present, then the priest is to read the Gospel and if no reader is present, all the readings.

It is valuable that this ministry be shared. so that through the working of the Holy Spirit’s inspiration and support, the Word of God becomes the foundation of the liturgical celebration.

There is always room for new readers.  Training can be provided to develop and hone reader’s skills.
